The hype around cloud computing would make you think mass adoption will happen tomorrow. But recent studies by a number of sources have shown that security is the biggest barrier to cloud adoption. The reality is cloud computing is simply another step in technology evolution following the path of mainframe, client server and Web applications, all of which had — and still have — their own security issues.

On January 28th, in conjunction with Data Privacy Day, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) convened its second “Exploring Privacy” Roundtable in Berkeley, California. The roundtable brought together some of the preeminent privacy thinkers from academia, industry, civil society and government to discuss complex and nuanced issues around technology policy, mobile computing, social networking and cloud computing.
One of the main topics of the day was the intersection of technology and policy. Specifically, given the importance of today’s technology-enabled, information-based services, what type of policy would help strengthen privacy protections, while at the same time allowing innovation to flourish? The dialogue reinforced that technology will almost always outpace policy, so we need to be careful as we think through what policy and or regulatory approaches might be required while ensuring we do not deny new and innovative products to the public.

A number of new features have been added to regulations.gov, the U.S. federal eRulemaking service. The new features include:
* an “Exchange” tab, to link to the site’s online forum;
* agency specific RSS feeds;
* a bookmarking tool;
* a browse-by-topic index;
* a “Your Voice in Action” tab, featuring graphic displays about regulations and comments;
* a “What’s Hot” tab;
* new links to information about comment periods that are closing soon, newly posted items, and frequently used items;
* a search wizard;
* two new videos: one on searching, and one on submitting comments.
